Discover Albinea

Albinea is an Italian municipality of about 8,954 inhabitants in the province of Reggio Emilia. It lies on the foothills to the right of the Torrente Crostolo, about 10 kilometres south of Reggio Emilia, and covers an area of 44.02 km2.

Located in the Matildic Lands at the foot of the Reggio Emilia Apennines, it is made up of three communities: Borzano, Montericco, and Albinea-Fola.

The municipality’s coat of arms and ceremonial banner (gonfalone) were granted by Royal Decree on 25 April 1929:

“The banner is green, featuring three crowns in the ancient style, arranged one above and two below. Each crown bears an inscription in black: “Albinetum” on the first, “Burcianun” on the second and “Mons Riccus” on the third. External Municipal ornaments.”

The crowns symbolise the three former autonomous communities of Borzano, Montericco and Albinea, which were first united in feudal times. In an ancient seal, these communities are instead depicted as three castles set against a natural mountain backdrop. The official banner is a white drape.
